Ending Gas tax funding
of motorized recreation

Minnesota's roads are in crisis and our environment, back yards and quiet places at risk. MRR calls for an end to public gas tax funding of motorized recreation with a new landmark report Mn Gas Tax Diversions to Motorized Recreation:
1961 - 2009
, released July 7, 2010.

What few Minnesotans realize:

  • $18.5 million in public gas tax revenue is annually
diverted from our state's ailing roads and bridges
    to motorized recreation.

  • Minnesota taxpayers have already pumped
    $350 million
    in gas tax funds into
    motorized recreation.

  • Another $200 million will be diverted in the next decade despite unfunded highway safety priorities and a predicted decline in our state’s roads and bridges.

  • Waste and abuse of public gas tax funds for motorized recreation is endemic with the DNR's unmissed million in additional ATV funding, the
most recent example. See MRR's report.

  • Gubernatorial candidates refuse to address these important issues or to respond to MRR's survey

Minnesota Roads, Bridges and Environment At Risk
Not only will Minnesota's roads and bridges suffer from a continued loss of diverted revenue, but our parks, forests, streams and backyards cannot sustain a continued annual $18.5 million expansion of motorized recreation and will suffer irreparably unless Minnesotans intervene to
end gas tax diversions.

4 Things You Can Do to End Gas Tax Funding of Motorized Recreation and Protect Minnesota
1. Distribute copies of MRR’s report widely to others.

2. Contact gubernatorial candidates and tell them to
“Put the gas tax back!”.  Gubernatorial Candidate Survey to the left.

3. Write a letter to the editor in your local paper.  Talking points left.

4. Make a contribution now to MRR to support MRR's
work to end gas tax funding of motorized recreation.
